Unless you¡¯ve been hiding under a rock or living in a cave for the past 3 months, you¡¯ve probably seen the video or heard the song by Korea¡¯s singing sensation Psy called ¡®Gangnam Style¡¯. The song is a parody about the people who live in the uber-rich area of Seoul known as Gangnam, and the wannabes who strive to be included as pseudo members of the Gangnam clan. It makes me laugh just thinking about it!
In fact, last week I was in the Gangnam area meeting a friend I hadn¡¯t seen for quite sometime. We decided to grab a bite to eat at one of the pseudo posh restaurants located in the inner abyss of the area. When we arrived, we were greeted by one of those Gangnam wannabe ladies; beautiful and tall with a painted grin on her face. Her demeanor was cold and calculated with no visible warmth from the smile on her face, quite fake as a matter of fact. In addition, having been in the restaurant business in Canada for a number of years, I couldn¡¯t help notice that the ingredients of all the dishes we ordered had probably been delivered by truck from a different region other than Seoul. The meal was okay, but not worth the price.
In comparison, I joined a couple of friends a few days later and headed to a restaurant in Pocheon. We were immediately greeted by a lovely lady who owned the samgyeopsal restaurant. Her infectious smile was true and made our group feel warmly welcomed. Unlike the restaurant in Gangnam, the ingredients were local. The vegetables and greens came from the garden she was growing behind the restaurant and the meat came from a local farmer. The food was fresh and delicious. In addition, I noticed the owner met every customer with that warm welcoming smile; there was nothing fake about it.
Most of my students dream of living in that materialistic world of Gangnam and embracing the ¡®Gangnam Style¡¯. However, there is nothing like living in an organically evolving social environment like Pocheon that has historically maintained its roots and welcomes its guests with that infectious ¡®Pocheon Smile¡¯!
