Well, you may think that I¡¯m awakening the weather gods to rear their evil heads and bring the winds and snow, but that¡¯s not what I¡¯m doing. Actually, the weather has remained quite mild compared to last year. If you remember, we had our first snowfall on November 8th of last year. So, with no snow on the horizon I decided to take a nice drive in the countryside that surrounds Pocheon-si. The air was fresh and clean, and surprisingly there wasn¡¯t much traffic. Where were all the people?
As I made my way along the meandering back roads I found small groups of people gathering around trucks filled with sacks of vegetables, cabbage to be exact. I then realized this was the time of year most Koreans get together and celebrate a long standing tradition that has been in Korea for thousands of years: KIMJANG! Now for those of you that have never experienced or for that matter have stopped celebrating this wonderful tradition, I only have one question: Why?
One of the best features about eating Korean food is that it is always a convivial and gregarious communal activity. In past years, when I first came to Korea, people considered it as a major annual event, so close relatives, several neighbor¡¯s housewives, and a few strong men all pitched in and worked together, myself included. People who participated in Kimjang helped wash cabbages, prepared materials, and stuffed ingredients inside each cabbage leaf. It was truly a celebration of friends and family sharing and caring; not to mention a wonderful bounty to be enjoyed during the coming winter months.
In fact, many families¡¯ distinctive flavor of kimchi has been handed down through generations. As well, winter is the season when there are the most varieties of kimchi. Although our modern lifestyle has given us certain conveniences, such as kimchi refrigerators and commercially produced kimchi, there is nothing like the love and care that goes into making your own kimchi and the taste, no comparison! So, winter is coming and I wish all those bound to tradition a Happy Kimjang Celebration!
