The use of English in our daily lives has reached a stage whereby the average Korean doesn’t realize he or she is actually utilizing the English language. For example, the minute you open your computer and browse the web what do you see, DAUM or NAVER? Is it in Korean? No, so why do many Korean university students still fear this international medium called ‘English’?
우리 일상생활에서 영어 사용은 평균적인 한국인들이 영어를 실제로 활용하고 있다는 것을 인식하지 못하는 단계에 이르렀다. 예를 들어, 여러분들이 컴퓨터를 열어 웹을 검색하는 순간 그것이 다음이나 네이버가 아닌가? 그게 한글로 되어있는가? 아니다. 그런데 왜 많은 한국 대학생들은 아직도 영어라고 불리는 국제적 매개체를 아직도 두려워하는가.
Korea has been able to enhance its growth in the world because of its pride, work ethic, and through the acceleration of its technological advancements. These attributes have not only spread around the world, but have created a curiosity that beckons the international community to investigate this wonderful land of ‘The Morning Calm’.
한국은 그들의 자부심과 근로 윤리와 기술적인 진보의 가속화로 인해서 세계에서 성장을 할 수 있었다. 이러한 특질들은 세계로 전파되었을 뿐 아니라, 국제사회로 하여금 ‘조용한 아침’의 경이로운 나라를 연구하도록 손짓하는 호기심을 낳았다.
However, as Choi Yearn Hong noted three years ago, “Korea's future progress will be helped by more English-speaking Korean people who will bring Korea closer to the world standard. Korea has come so far dramatically from a poor agrarian society to an industrial and information society. It needs a breakthrough to become an even more advanced nation than it is currently” (Korean Times, August 13, 2009).
하지만 삼년 전 최연홍이 말하기를 “한국 미래 발전은 한국을 세계 수준에 가깝게 하는 더 많은 영어 상용 한국인들에 의해서 도움을 받을 것이다. 한국은 가난한 농업사회에서 산업정보 사회로 매우 극적으로 전환하였다. 현재보다 더 발전된 국가가 되기 위해서는 비약적 도약이 필요 하다.”(코리아 타임즈, 2009, 8, 13)
The recent worldwide buzz of the Hallyu movement is definitely aiding Korea’s prominence as a ‘go to’ international destination, but it will take more to maintain this vibrant energy. The future lies in the ability of our forth-coming global citizens, the students, to convey Korea’s message in a language that is understood and used by many global residents, for now that is the English language!
최근의 한류운동의 세계적 열광은 국제적 목표점을 향해 가는 한국의 명성을 분명히 돕고 있다. 그러나 이 역동적 에너지를 유지하는데 시간이 더 걸릴 것이다. 미래는 다가오는 지구촌 시민인 학생들이 지구촌민들이 이해할 수 있고 사용하고 있는 언어로 한국의 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 능력에 달려있으며, 그것이 바로 영어인 것이다.
