‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways’. Do you remember this line from Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous sonnet? So, how did you spend Valentine’s Day? Was it just another day where routines beckoned their call or did you manage to share a special time with a special someone? Why do we only have one day to remind us of our affection for the people we love? Well there’s good news. There’s more than one day in Korea that people can express their LOVE for that special someone. In fact, on the fourteenth of each month Koreans have the opportunity to celebrate their love in different ways, Valentine’s Day being one.
‘내가 너를 어떻게 사랑하지? 방법을 헤아려볼게’ 이 시행이 엘리자베스 바렛 브라운닝의 유명한 소네트에 있다는 것을 기억하는가? 그래, 여러분들은 발렌타인데이를 어떻게 보냈는가? 판에 박은 일들이나 하는 그저 그런 날이었는가 아니면 특별한 사람과 특별한 시간을 함께 하였는가? 왜 우리는 사랑하는 사람에 대한 애정을 단 하루만 생각하는가? 그래, 좋은 소식이 있다. 한국에는 특별한 사람에게 사랑을 표현할 수 있는 하루보다 더 있다. 사실상, 매달 14일에 한국인들은 다른 방법으로 사랑을 축하하는 기회를 가지는데 발렌타인데이가 그 하나이다.
I’m always shocked at the colorful displays that line the streets of Pocheon on Valentine’s Day, actually in any city. From convenience stores to bakeries, the streets become alive with candies, chocolates, stuffed toys, and flowers. Chocolate companies turn their creative energies to full throttle so their customers can be WOWED by the opulence of their hard work. Walking to one of my favorite restaurants in Pocheon, I couldn’t help but listen to the gaggle of girls talking about which display of chocolates they wanted to buy for their special Valentine. Even though the girls were using chocolates as a sign of their affections, they understand one of the golden rules in life; love must be given in order to be received, something we as human beings often forget. How can Love be felt if one doesn’t express Love? More importantly, Love must be shared in order to grow.
나는 항상 포천의 거리에 줄을 서고 있는 다채로운 전시물에 충격을 받는데, 사실 어느 도시도 다 그렇다. 편의점에서 제과점까지 모든 거리가 캔디, 초콜릿, 박제한 인형, 꽃들로 생기가 돈다. 초콜릿 회사들은 고객들이 작품의 현란함에 감동하도록 그들의 창의적인 에너지를 전력을 다해 돌린다. 내가 좋아하는 포천에 있는 한 식당으로 걸어가다가 그들의 특별한 발렌타인을 위해서 구매하고 싶은 초콜릿의 전시에 대해 조잘대는 소녀들의 말을 듣지 않을 수 없었다. 소녀들은 애정의 표시로 초콜릿을 이용하고 있지만 인생에서 황금 법칙중의 하나를 이해하게 된다. 즉 사랑이란 받기 위해서는 주어야 한다는 것인데, 인간인 우리들이 그걸 가끔 잊고 있는 것이다. 누군가 사랑을 표현하지 않는다면 그것을 어떻게 느낄 수 있겠는가? 더 중요한 것은 사랑이란 자라기 위해서는 나누어야한다는 것이다.
So if you missed your chance on Valentine’s Day to express your Love, never fear, you have 320 days left in this year of the Dragon. May all of you experience LOVE in order for it to touch your hearts, affect your lives and satisfy your souls. I send all my Love to you, Pocheon!
그래서 여러분들이 발렌타인데이에 사랑을 표현할 기회를 놓쳤다면 결코 두려워하지 말고, 이 용의 해에 320일이나 남아있다. 여러분 모두 마음을 감동하도록 사랑을 경험하여 삶에 영향을 주고 영혼을 만족시키기 바란다. 필자는 포천 여러분들에게 나의 사랑을 전하고 싶다.
