With Seollal, Korea’s largest holiday, just past, the hustle and bustle of the holiday has run its course. For Korean housewives, the festivities inevitably brought with them the stressful prospects of multiple rounds of cooking to prepare for the traditional ritual charye. For all people the culture shapes their mental and world view. In Korea, especially, Seollal is an integral part of Korean traditional culture and also the portrait of what Koreans were, in the past, and are now. As part of this long standing tradition, young children make a deep bow known as sebae to their elders -- first to their grandparents and continuing down according to age -- as a New Year’s greeting. Their elders, in return, reward them with a gift of money and words of wisdom. So what are these words of wisdom that transcend from one generation to the next?
이제 막 지난 한국의 최대의 명절인 설날이 오면 휴일을 시끌벅적한 가운데 보내게 된다. 이런 축제들은 한국의 가정주부에게 전통적인 차례를 준비하느라 필연적으로 몇 차례의 음식을 마련하는 스트레스가 가득하리라 예상을 하게 된다. 문화는 모든 사람들에게 정신과 세계관을 형성한다. 특히 한국에서 설날은 전통 문화의 중요한 부분이고 과거와 현재에 있어서 한국인의 자화상이기도 하다. 오래 지속되어온 전통으로서 어린 아이들은 어른들에게 세배로 알려진 큰 절을 새해의 인사로 하는데, 처음에는 조부모에게 하고 연속해서 나이에 따라서 아래로 내려간다. 어른들은 세배돈과 덕담으로 보상한다. 그렇다면 한 세대에서 다음 세대로 뛰어넘어가는 덕담들은 무엇인가.
I remember when I came to Korea and experienced my first temple stay. It is here that I set out on an incredible journey into the world of Seon or Zen as it is known more commonly outside of Korea, which means goodness or virtue. This meditational process affords people the opportunity to open their eyes to the values of human beings regardless of race, color, or creed. The underlying idea is that the mind is naturally pure but is polluted by extraneous impurities.
필자는 한국에 와서 첫 번째로 겪었던 사찰 체류를 기억한다. 여기에서 필자는 한국 밖에서 더 널리 알려진 선과 덕성을 의미하는 선의 세계로의 믿을 수 없는 여행을 시작하였다. 이런 명상의 과정은 사람들에게 인종, 피부색깔, 그리고 믿음과 무관하게 인간의 가치에 대한 눈을 뜨는 기회를 제공한다. 그 저변의 생각은 마음이란 본래 순수한데 외부의 비순수에 의해서 오염되었다는 것이다.
So, here we are embarking on a new quest; the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Dragon. The dragon, the fifth animal in the Sibiji, represents courage, optimism, and hope. Many say the dragon is a symbol of power and superior control. It's not evil. The dragon is a good symbol. It also represents change and mobility. So what would a Dragon’s words of wisdom be?
그래서 이제 우리는 새로운 추구, 음력의 새해 즉 용의 해를 시작하고 있는 것이다. 용은 십이지에서 다섯 번째 동물로 용기, 낙관주의 그리고 희망을 나타낸다. 많은 사람들은 말하기를 용은 권력과 우월한 지배의 상징이다. 그건 악마가 아니다. 용은 좋은 상징이다. 또한 그것은 변화와 가동성을 나타낸다. 그렇다면 용의 덕담은 무엇일까?
May the year 2012 give you the courage to illuminate your optimism, the hope that good will prevail over evil, and the mental mobility to change and discover your power of Seon. I wish all of you a very Healthy, Happy, Prosperous and LOVING New Year.
