Every situation in life gives us the opportunity to learn something. The gift I have been given by living in an Asian culture is to experience and learn, not only about myself, but more importantly, the beauty that exists within each and every human being. However, in a country like Korea where households spends so much money, time, and effort on formally educating their young, they have forgotten about the notion of learning how to learn.
We have come to a new age in our worldly communities that profess a need to become lifelong learners, not just for the young, but for all members of our respective societies. Koreans can be proud of the fact that they are one of the most highly educated societies in the world. However, being educated and learning how to learn are not the same. As a professor, I am dumbfounded on the narrow minded means my students have when it comes to learning. They merely imitate old habits and think memorizing is learning, but there is so much more to learning and understanding. As Confucius mentions, ¡°Those who do not learn to understand are only cattle dressed up in men¡¯s clothes¡±
I recently read an article that mentions Korea as lagging behind the world in this notion of lifelong learning. The idea of learning so a person can reap the benefits of a happy life is nothing new. Confucius was quite astute when he said, ¡°To love benevolence without loving learning is bound to lead to foolishness¡±. The foolishness may lay in the fact that we haven¡¯t taught our students how to love learning nor the many methods of learning how to learn.
If we can take a page from lifelong learning, the notion of intrinsic or self-motivated pursuit of knowledge and skills for either personal or professional reasons, then we can begin to understand the steps that must follow. It is the development of the intrinsic value in learning that Korean society must emphasize, rather than holding people hostage to test taking in order to prove their intellectual worth.
With a new government coming forth this year, I can only hope they approach the notion of learning how to learn with a zeal that reiterates Confucius belief, ¡°I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand!¡±
