"Children are the future of our nation. Let's show respect for children. Children who grow up with ridicule and contempt from others will become people who disrespect others, while children who grow up with respect from others will become people who respect others in turn." -Pang Chong-hwan, founder of Korean Children's Day
In Korean culture parents, elders, and advanced age command respect, yet Pang advised all members of Korean society to also show love and respect to children since they represented the nation's future. May 5th is Children's Day in Korea ("eorini nal") and is a day set aside to celebrate children's happiness and to remind each citizen that the day should be commemorated to promote children's general welfare. However, I believe Children¡¯s Day is not just for the children, but more importantly an opportunity for all people to learn something about our changing society through the innocent eyes of our children.
As our social environment becomes a mosaic of different cultures, especially in Pocheon, it¡¯s through the eyes of a child that we can learn to exist more harmoniously. Children only see the world through genuine and pure love. They don¡¯t have any preconceived notions of race, color, intellect, class, or prejudice. That¡¯s the reason why they are so innocent and their lovely smiles warm our hearts. In fact, I would love to see the Pocheon government take the nation¡¯s lead in promoting a Children¡¯s International Festival. If we believe that children are truly our future, what better way to nurture the respect that Pang talked about in 1922?
So let us learn to share our genuineness and smiles with everyone because I do believe that there is always a child within each and every one of us. Happy International Children¡¯s Day!
